Practice

Research & Theory:

  • Mastering a skill requires a fair amount of practice.
Students may have to practice a skill 24 times to reach 80% proficiency.
  • While practicing, students should adapt and change what has been learned.
This is where knowledge is reinforced with examples - and LESS can be More.

Recommendations for Classroom Practice:

  • Determine which skills are worth practicing.
  • Plan massed (close together) and distributed practice (spaced apart).
  • Ask students to chart speed and accuracy.
  • Use practice to shape a skill or process.
